Natasha Noorani selected as the only Pakistani for Goethe Talents 2019

Ethnomusicologist, Musician and Co-Founder of Pakistan’s Leading Comprehensive Music Symposium, Lahore Music Meet, Natasha Noorani is set to represent Pakistan in Germany this August as the only musician from the country for the fifth annual Goethe Talents Programme 2019. Indeed, Natasha Noorani will be one of 10 musicians from across the world to participate in the 10-day Goethe Talents Scholarship, scheduled to take place from 14th to the 24th of August in Berlin.

The Goethe Talents Programme 2019 aims to support and connect young, aspiring musical artists including singer-songwriters, composers and DJs. A cooperation between the Goethe-Institut and »Pop-Kultur«, the scholarship will offer a variety of activities to experience the “music city” Berlin before the actual Festival: Studio visits, jam-sessions, short traineeships in selected companies from Berlin’s creative industries, listening sessions and meetings with scholarship holders of the Musicboard Berlin GmbH. Indeed, the scholarship is directed at musicians between 20 and 30 years of age who have already gained some experience in the field of music and have a solid grasp of the English language.

Natasha Noorani, selected via the worldwide network of Goethe-Institut, is a Lahore based singer-songwriter, playback singer, festival director and music promoter. As a musician, her music lies somewhere between the realms of contemporary R&B, neo-soul and progressive rock which can be heard in her debut EP ‘Munaasib’ (2018). Noorani has also collaborated with various Pakistani acts including Strings, Biryani Brothers, Ali Suhail, Sikandar Ka Mandar & Gentle Robot.

Currently pursuing a MMus in Ethnomusicology from the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), Noorani also featured in the summer blockbuster film, Baaji, on the song Ye Aaj Mujh Ko Kya Hua as a playback singer for ‘Meera Ji’. Noorani has also been deeply involved in the Pakistani music industry having co-founded South-Asia’s premiere music festival, Lahore Music Meet (LMM). Since its inception, Lahore Music Meet has brought together enthusiasts, artisans, artists, patrons, industry representatives and academics to initiate dialogue on the developments and shortcomings in music in Pakistan. Most recently, Noorani served as General Manager for the Pakistan’s leading music platform, Coke Studio Pakistan (Season 10) and has managed South-Asian pop duo, Strings.

The Donkey King to Be the First Ever Pakistani Film to Release in South Korea

The Donkey King, the highest grossing Pakistani animated film directed by Aziz Jindani, is soon going to be available internationally in multiple local languages, Korean being the first one.

The movie is dubbed in the local language and will be released in South Korea on the 28th of August. This will be the first ever Pakistani animated film to be released theatrically on a large scale in South Korea alongside a slate of other international animated films including Angry Birds 2 and Wonder Park.

Aziz Jindani, the Director of The Donkey King, and the man behind Pakistan’s first and most popular superhero animated series has stated, “This is a huge achievement for us as a nation that a Pakistani film has reached such high levels of popularity and is now reaching newer audiences. We will however not stop just with the release in South Korea; we are trying to unlock other international markets too and further updates on this front will be shared soon. This is a huge stepping stone for the Pakistani film industry as it is creating new benchmarks internationally, giving us much more exposure than we ever had before.”

The Donkey King is an animated comedy film that was released in Pakistan in October, 2018 and has been produced by Geo Films and Talisman Studios. The film features the voices of Jan Rambo, Ismail Tara, Hina Dilpazeer, Ghulam Mohiuddin and Jawed Sheikh, and grossed Rs. 24.75 crores after running in the cinemas for 25 weeks.

Renowned travel and lifestyle photographer Areesh Zubair showcases 8 years of work in debut exhibition

Travel and Lifestyle photographer Areesh Zubair exhibited his works captured over the past 8 years as a photographer. Resonating throughout the exhibition is the artist’s exploration of the world through the lens of his camera.

The exhibition features a prominent series of pictures depicting and representing all four provinces on Pakistan. The photographer has travelled far and wide to capture the diversity instilled in the country. The pictures represent the various classes, ethnicities, cultural influences present in our country and carry the photographer’s message that despite all this diversity, we are more similar, more united than we may appear to be.

Talking about the exhibition Areesh said, “My 8-year journey has made me reflect on how similar we all are, regardless of our cultures, caste, creed, religion. All across the country I have seen a cohesive structure that makes Pakistan what it is and this Exhibit is just a representation of our unity despite our diversity and that I believe is what makes us special”.

Showcasing throughout this exhibition are works that are close to the artist’s heart. One of the items at display is the first picture taken by the photographer with his first professional grade camera back in 2012. Among the exhibits, also displayed are award winning shots and photographs taken with a smartphone depicting the importance of craft rather than tool.

Also present among the exhibits is nature photography from different corners of Pakistan, contemporary photography featuring Historical buildings, emerging infrastructures portraying the sense of completeness and inclusiveness that the photographer holds dear.

Kamzarf Star Rabab Hashim, Set To Play a Dynamic Role In Meray Mohsin

With the blockbuster Kamzarf just ending to raving reviews and ratings, leading lady Rabab Hashim, is all set to be back on our screens with a 7th Sky Entertainment’s production ‘Mere Mohsin’, going on air on Geo Entertainment.

‘Meray Mohsin’ is the third time Hashim is working with the director Ali Faizan, with whom she has previously worked on, ‘Ishqa Waay’ and ‘Piya Mann Bhae’ and the ensemble cast for the serial includes Syed Jibran, Saba Hameed, Jinaan Hussain & Mariyam Nafees.

“2019 has been a great year with Kamzarf receiving so much love from everyone and now I am so excited to be coming back on the screen playing a completely different role in Meray Mohsin,” Rabab Hashim said. “The best thing about this role is the transformation it goes through as the story progresses and how she deals with conflict in her life.” she further added.

Mere Mohsin is a 7th Sky Entertainment production, by Asad Qureshi and Abdullah Kadwani, and scheduled to go on air from June 19th, 2019 every Wednesday at 8pm on Geo Entertainment.

Junaid Khan and Hira Mani Reunite in Upcoming Project

Multi-talented actor and singer, Junaid Khan, who has been ruling our television screens giving us back to back blockbuster projects including Kamzarf, Silsilay and Ishq Tamasha to name a few, has just signed a project with Hira Mani – his hit costar from the 2017 blockbuster serial Sun Yaara.

 

Titled “Makafaat”, the serial will see Junaid in a lead role alongside Hira Mani, and is being produced under the banner of Mastermind Productions. Directed by Ahmed Kamran, the serial boasts a stellar cast, including Atiqa Odho, Ali Ansari, and Marium Nafees along with Junaid Khan.

 

“I am extremely excited about this project, because not only does the character I am playing has various dimensions, but I am also going to be back on screen with Hira (Mani) who is not only great fun to work with, but someone my fans enjoy seeing me on screen with,” Junaid Khan remarked when talking about his new project.

 

Shoot for Makafaat will begin after Eid ul Azha in Karachi, but there is a major part of the serial that will be shot in Europe as well.

SHARMEEN OBAID-CHINOY releases the second part from “Shattering the Silence”

SOC Films, helmed by the two-time Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, releases the second part from the animated series “Shattering the Silence”, a project aimed at creating meaningful dialogue around issues of child abuse.

The second animated short-film from Shattering the Silence is titled “Iqbal Ka Bachpan” which explores the story of Reebok Human Rights Award recipient Iqbal Masih; a young Pakistani boy who was forced to work as a carpet weaver in the 90s. Working through arduous conditions from the age of 4 onwards, Iqbal grew stunted and hopeless. However, when bonded labour was declared illegal by the Supreme Court, Iqbal was able to struggle and pursue his dream of attending school. Today, millions of children are still employed in Pakistan, from the ages of 4 to 14 years old and work in many sectors of the labour force from brick kilns to manufacturing. This second part raises light on the importance of creating awareness among children and their families about the laws which safeguard them and the quality of life they are expected to lead as their basic human right.

An SOC Films initiative, Shattering the Silence is a 4-part animated series, in Urdu, which aims to critically engage audiences, and children specifically, with real-life stories of child abuse and to educate them with the corresponding laws, the resources which can be accessed and the steps which can be taken if they, or any other children they know of, are forced into situations of marriage, labour, trafficking or physical abuse.

Reema Khan will be seen endorsing the work of Masarrat Misbah to empower women who have gone through the trauma of an acid attack and require reconstructive surgery, psychosocial support and skill training to help them become self-sufficient members of society. Her main aim would be to spread awareness about the crime and the need for stronger legislation specific to this issue.

The Depilex Smileagain Foundation (DSF) was conceptualized in 2003 as a support and assistance group for women who are victims of domestic violence, with special emphasis in the area of deliberate acid and kerosene burning. They have many registered acid burnt victims with them who require assistance and deserve the support of such organizations. Their work is not just humbling, but is inspiring others to join their cause as well.
