Terrorism charges dropped in Ichhra Bazaar case

Judge Arshad Javed of the Anti-Terrorism Court has ruled that the Ichhra Bazaar case be sent to the session court for trial, eliminating any terrorist allegations from it.

A man approached a woman in a bazaar demanding that she change her clothing because she was wearing a printed shirt with Arabic calligraphy in February. The situation worsened when she refused, drawing an angry mob motivated by charges of blasphemy.

Because of her attire, the woman sought safety at a food shop but was met with threats and cornered and attacked by a mob. Her dress’ Arabic writing, which said “Halwa,” sparked outrage from the audience and allegations of blasphemy. In light of the court’s recent decision, police have concluded that a number of suspects, including Muhammad Ali, also known as Chand Butt, Adil Sarwar, Malik Khurram Shehzad, Atmash Saqlain, and Nadeem, were responsible for the attack.

Aleemuddin, Allama Saqib Ali, and Khalid Mahmood Khalid have all been found not guilty in the meantime. Putting her personal safety at danger, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Gulberg, Shehrbano Naqvi, intervened during the attack and saved the woman from the furious mob. After being filed under anti-terrorism statutes at first, the case has since been moved to a session court for additional proceedings, indicating a substantial change in the way the incident is being treated legally.
