Recently, a 38-year-old Japanese man was taken into custody after making 100 calls to his wife in one day. A resident of Amagasaki, Japan, the woman reported her husband to the police, alleging that he was phoning her up to 100 times a day, anonymously, until she hung up.

The 31-year-old woman first began getting odd phone calls from someone who appeared to be an unfamiliar caller. The caller didn’t say anything else until she lost patience and hung up.

This continued for a few weeks. She couldn’t block the calls because they always originated from an unknown number. She received dozens of calls most days, but occasionally she received more than 100 calls in one day.

But one evening, while using her husband’s phone to play video games, she discovered that her own phone never rang when she was with him.

She reported her suspicions to the police, who later collected proof and took her husband into custody.

The man said, “I love my wife, and made phone calls to her without saying anything,” as if stalking her was evidence of his love for her, in response to the question of why he had been tormenting his own wife with his unusual calls for more than a month.

In Japan, it’s not unusual for married couples to live apart, particularly if one of them has move for work. Occasionally, one of the partners becomes so envious that they begin to stalk the other.

Nonetheless, Amagasaki police have confirmed that this was the first case of phone stalking involving a couple living together.
