The latest data from China’s General Administration of Customs unveils a promising trend for Pakistan’s sporting goods industry. From January to November 2024, China imported basketballs, footballs, and volleyballs worth $10.7 million from Pakistan—an impressive 6.68% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
This development reflects two significant milestones: Pakistan’s growing reputation as a hub for premium sporting goods and the strengthening economic partnership with China.
Pakistan, especially Sialkot, is celebrated worldwide for its exquisite craftsmanship in sporting goods. Skilled artisans have perfected the art of creating high-quality footballs, basketballs, and volleyballs, placing the country at the forefront of this industry. However, despite this expertise, limited access to international markets has historically restricted the industry’s growth.
China, a global manufacturing giant with advanced technology and a vast trade network, provides Pakistan with an unparalleled opportunity to expand its footprint. The surge in exports is not only a testament to the quality of Pakistani products but also a reflection of the growing interest in sports among the Chinese population.
Sheikh Mohammad Shariq, Chief Representative of the National Bank of Pakistan in China, highlighted how government-backed fitness initiatives and an increasingly health-conscious middle class are driving demand for high-quality sporting equipment. This is especially evident in China’s grassroots sports programs and preparations for major sporting events, where the demand for footballs, basketballs, and volleyballs has surged.
Under the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), trade between the two nations continues to thrive. The export growth of Pakistani sporting goods underscores this strengthened relationship, paving the way for a more prosperous future.
