Reiterating the Kashmiri Struggle: Pakistan Stands Firm for Self-Determination Rights
Posted on January 5, 2025 by News Desk
Pakistan has once again affirmed its unwavering commitment to the Kashmiri people’s struggle for self-determination, with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif calling for decisive global action to uphold their fundamental rights.
On the 76th anniversary of the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) resolution, the leaders highlighted Pakistan’s ongoing political, diplomatic, and moral support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Historical Context of the UNCIP Resolution
Adopted on January 5, 1949, the UNCIP resolution guarantees a free and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices, enabling the Kashmiri people to decide their future. Despite the resolution, this right has been denied for over seven decades.
President Zardari, in his statement, stressed, “We reaffirm the inalienable right of Kashmiris to self-determination, enshrined in international law and human rights instruments.” He condemned India’s attempts to alter the demographic and political fabric of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) since August 5, 2019.
“These actions aim to disempower the Kashmiri people in their homeland, yet their spirit remains unbroken. The international community must act to support their struggle,” he urged.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Call for Global Responsibility
Echoing these sentiments, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reminded the world of its responsibility toward the Kashmiri people. He stated that January 5, observed annually as the Right to Self-Determination Day, marks the UNCIP resolution’s historic call for a free and fair plebiscite.
“Right to self-determination is a core principle of the UN Charter and international law,” Sharif noted, highlighting the annual UN General Assembly resolution advocating for this legal right. He criticized India’s systemic efforts to alter the demographic and political structure of the disputed region, emphasizing the need for immediate cessation of human rights violations in IIOJK.
The Global Call to Action
Both leaders urged the international community, especially the United Nations, to honor its commitments, calling for the restoration of fundamental rights and freedoms in Kashmir. They also emphasized the release of political prisoners and an end to the systemic brutalities faced by the Kashmiri people.
As we reflect on the significance of January 5, let us stand in solidarity with the Kashmiri people and amplify their call for justice, freedom, and dignity.
