The New Year kicked off with an extraordinary spectacle at Tokyo’s Toyosu Fish Market as traders gathered for the first tuna auction of 2025. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and iconic status, the Toyosu market once again proved its prestige when a 276-kilogram Atlantic bluefin tuna fetched a staggering 207 million yen (approximately $1.3 million).
The lively event began at dawn with the ring of a bell, marking the start of a cherished Japanese tradition. Buyers, both on-site and remote, placed their bids for raw and frozen tuna sourced from across Japan and the world. The crown jewel of this year’s auction came from Oma, Aomori Prefecture—an area renowned for its exceptional tuna.
This sale ranks as the second-highest in history, following the record-breaking auction in 2019, where a bluefin tuna sold for 333.6 million yen (approximately $2.1 million). Such auctions underscore the reverence for quality seafood in Japanese culture and the global appeal of bluefin tuna.
The Toyosu Market remains a testament to Japan’s dedication to preserving its culinary heritage while embracing innovation.
