Punjab Shifts to Cash Handouts for Ramazan: A Game-Changer for Families in Need
Posted on February 8, 2025 by News Desk

The Punjab government has announced a significant shift in its approach to Ramazan aid distribution. Instead of subsidised Ramazan bazaars or ration packages, this year, the government will distribute Rs30 billion in direct financial assistance to deserving families.
This initiative aims to ensure transparency, efficiency, and dignity for those in need by providing them with direct cash transfers. Each eligible household will receive Rs10,000 at their doorstep, allowing them to purchase essential items at their convenience.
How Will the Aid Be Distributed?
The Punjab government has partnered with the Bank of Punjab and Pakistan Post to facilitate the seamless distribution of financial aid. Here’s how it will work:
- The cash handout will be delivered directly to beneficiaries’ homes through Pakistan Post’s home distribution service.
- To withdraw the amount, recipients must verify their identity using their national ID card and biometric authentication.
- Registration for the scheme started on February 1 and will continue until February 15. Only pre-registered families will be eligible for the aid.
Why This Approach Instead of Ramazan Bazaars?
In previous years, the government organized subsidised Ramazan bazaars or ration packages. While these initiatives helped many, they had challenges such as:
- Long queues and overcrowding at bazaars, making it inconvenient for families.
- Limited choice of products, restricting families from buying their preferred essentials.
- Leakages and mismanagement, leading to inefficiencies in resource distribution.
By shifting to direct cash transfers, the government ensures that recipients have full control over their purchases, leading to greater convenience and dignity.
Rawalpindi’s Plan for Ramazan Bazaars
Despite the Punjab government’s move to direct cash aid, reports indicate that Rawalpindi’s Deputy Commissioner Hassan Waqar Cheema has called a joint meeting with food wholesalers, essential commodity suppliers, and fruit and vegetable market dealers to discuss setting up 16 cheap Ramazan bazaars. This suggests that some districts may still operate traditional bazaars alongside the direct cash transfer scheme.
What This Means for the People of Punjab
This transition to cash handouts is expected to:
✅ Empower families by giving them the freedom to purchase what they truly need.
✅ Reduce corruption and inefficiencies in aid distribution.
✅ Provide financial relief to families struggling with inflation.
How to Register?
Eligible families must register before February 15 to receive the Rs10,000 aid. If you or someone you know qualifies, make sure to complete the process in time!
