Posted on February 8, 2025 by News Desk

The Punjab government has taken a major leap toward a greener future by launching a pilot project featuring 27 state-of-the-art electric buses in Lahore. This initiative aims to combat rising pollution levels and reduce operational costs while providing an efficient, comfortable, and technologically advanced public transport system.
A Sustainable Step Forward
With an initial investment of Rs 2.4 billion, the eco-friendly buses will operate on a 21-kilometer route from Green Town to the Lahore Railway Station. The test run is currently in progress, with the official service set to commence on February 16, benefiting approximately 17,000 daily commuters.
Each bus, imported from China at a cost of Rs 88 million, boasts a 12-year operational lifespan. These buses are designed to provide a smooth and accessible commuting experience, especially for differently-abled passengers, with dedicated ramps and seating.
Advanced Features for a Modern Travel Experience
The newly introduced electric buses are not just environmentally friendly but also offer a range of advanced facilities, including:
✅ GPS tracking for route monitoring
✅ Wi-Fi connectivity for seamless internet access
✅ USB charging ports to keep devices powered on the go
✅ Smart card & digital wallet payments for cashless transactions
✅ Real-time tracking via a mobile app for commuter convenience
✅ Separate compartments for women ensuring safety and privacy
✅ Surveillance cameras to prevent harassment and enhance security
A Vision for the Future
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz personally inspected the buses and emphasized their significance in making public transport more accessible, affordable, and environmentally responsible. The project is not just limited to Lahore—after its successful implementation, the government plans to expand the electric bus network to other cities across Punjab, with a long-term goal of deploying 620 electric buses in major urban centers.
This initiative is a transformative step toward cleaner air, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, and a modernized public transport system. Lahore’s commuters can now look forward to an improved, efficient, and eco-conscious way to travel.
