As the holy month of Ramadan 2025 approaches, anticipation grows among Muslims worldwide regarding the official moon sighting and the start of fasting. According to the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), Ramadan in Pakistan is expected to commence on March 2, 2025, based on lunar calculations.
SUPARCO has provided astronomical insights into the expected sighting of the crescent moon. Their calculations indicate that the new moon will form on February 28, 2025, at 5:45 PM Pakistan Standard Time (PST). However, despite its formation, the crescent will be too faint to be visible to the naked eye, making it unlikely that Ramadan will start on March 1 in Pakistan.
The research body explained that:
While the crescent may not be visible in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia may witness the Ramadan moon on February 28. This means that Ramadan in Saudi Arabia could begin on March 1, 2025, a day earlier than in Pakistan. This difference in moon sighting often results in variations in fasting schedules across Muslim-majority countries.
SUPARCO has also provided insights into Eid ul-Fitr 2025, which marks the end of Ramadan:
While SUPARCO’s predictions are based on scientific calculations, the final decision regarding the moon sighting will be made by Pakistan’s Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. The committee, headed by religious scholars and experts, follows traditional methods of crescent observation and will officially announce the commencement of Ramadan.
As the Muslim community prepares for this sacred month of fasting, prayer, and reflection, stay tuned for official announcements closer to the date.
