UK Grants Fewer Work Visas While Asylum Claims Reach Record High in 2024
Posted on March 2, 2025 by News Desk

The UK has witnessed a significant drop in work visa approvals in 2024, with a staggering 37% decline compared to the previous year. This sharp fall is primarily due to the stringent immigration policies introduced by the British government, particularly targeting health and social care workers. On the other hand, asylum claims have reached an all-time high, marking a substantial shift in the country’s immigration landscape.
Work Visa Approvals Decline Sharply
According to the UK Home Office’s latest immigration statistics, only 210,098 work visas were granted in 2024, down from the previous year’s numbers. The most impacted category is health and social care workers, where visa approvals plummeted by 81%, reaching just 27,174. These figures highlight the continuing downward trend, which started in early 2024 after the previous Conservative government enforced stricter immigration rules to reduce reliance on foreign labor.
The decline in work visa approvals has raised concerns about labor shortages in essential sectors, particularly healthcare. The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) has been historically dependent on foreign workers, and the reduced number of visas could further strain the already struggling healthcare system.
Record-Breaking Asylum Claims in the UK
While work visas have decreased, asylum claims have surged to unprecedented levels. The data reveals that 108,138 asylum seekers applied for refugee status in the UK in 2024, an 18% increase from the previous year. This surpasses the previous record set in 2002.
The most common nationalities seeking asylum in the UK were:
- Pakistan
- Afghanistan
- Iran
This rise in asylum claims reflects growing instability and humanitarian crises in these regions, prompting thousands to seek safety in the UK.
Increase in Small Boat Crossings
The UK has also seen a 25% rise in small boat arrivals, with 37,000 migrants crossing into the country via this route. Despite the government’s efforts to curb illegal immigration through measures such as the Rwanda deportation plan, the numbers indicate a persistent challenge in managing unauthorized migration.
Decline in Refugee Approvals
Despite the rise in asylum applications, the approval rate for refugee status or other leave at the initial decision stage has dropped by 37%, with only 39,616 people being granted protection. This signals a stricter approach to asylum policies, leading to longer processing times and a backlog in the system.
Impact and Future Implications
The UK’s immigration policies are undergoing a major shift, prioritizing stricter border controls while reducing dependency on foreign workers. However, the drop in work visas could exacerbate labor shortages, particularly in healthcare and social services. Meanwhile, the surge in asylum claims highlights the increasing pressure on the UK’s immigration system, as more people seek refuge from war, persecution, and economic hardship.
As the UK government continues to review its immigration strategy, the coming months will be crucial in determining the future of work visa policies and asylum regulations.
