Aga Khan University Hospital Celebrates World Immunisation Week with Community-Focused Events

Karachi, May 2, 2025 — In a powerful demonstration of commitment to public health, the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) commemorated World Immunisation Week 2025 with a series of inspiring events aimed at educating the public and appreciating healthcare heroes.

Globally observed from April 24 to 30, World Immunisation Week shines a spotlight on the life-saving power of vaccines. This year’s theme, “Immunisation for All is Humanly Possible,” reflects a global call for equity in healthcare, emphasizing that immunisation is a right, not a privilege.

Community Engagement at the Heart of the Celebration

AKUH’s Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, under the leadership of Dr. Fyezah Jehan (Professor and Chair) and Dr. Ali Faisal Saleem (Vice Chair and Associate Professor), launched the week’s activities with a heartfelt ceremony. The symbolic cake-cutting and awareness messages marked a renewed commitment to vaccine education and child health advocacy.

“Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective public health tools in human history,” said Dr. Ali Faisal Saleem. “This week serves as a reminder that timely immunisation can save lives and ensure healthier futures for generations.”

Recognising Healthcare Champions

Further activities took place at the Community Health Centre (CHC) Pharmacy, where Syed Shamim Raza (Director of Pharmacy) and Khairunnissa Hooda (Chief Nursing Officer) honoured the tireless efforts of immunisation nurses. These frontline workers, often overlooked, are critical in delivering vaccines, building trust, and safeguarding public health.

Syed Shamim Raza noted, “This week is about celebrating our nurses and highlighting our shared responsibility in preventing vaccine-preventable diseases. The pharmacy team doesn’t just dispense medicine — we help build healthier communities.”

Educating for a Healthier Tomorrow

The events not only honoured the commitment of AKUH’s healthcare professionals but also aimed to elevate public understanding about immunisation. The hospital’s week-long campaign reminded families that protecting children through vaccines is both a personal and societal duty.

Through outreach, education, and recognition, Aga Khan University Hospital’s World Immunisation Week activities continue to be a model of how healthcare institutions can lead the charge in promoting vaccine equity and awareness.
