Quetta International Airport has proudly made headlines by winning the FIDIC Asia-Pacific Engineering Excellence Award. This achievement marks a major milestone not just for the city of Quetta, but for Pakistan as a whole.
The award was given for the airport’s newly rebuilt runway, which was completed under very challenging conditions. The construction took place without closing the airport, which kept flights operating and passengers safe.
The Pakistan Airports Authority and the team of expert consultants were praised for their outstanding planning, technical expertise, and safety practices during the project.
This new runway is not just any ordinary upgrade. It is now one of the longest and strongest rigid-runways in the Asia-Pacific region. It was built at a cost of around PKR 5 billion, making it a massive investment in Pakistan’s aviation infrastructure.
The first aircraft to land on this upgraded runway was PIA Flight PK-3250 from Islamabad. This historic moment took place on 31 May 2023, marking the official start of operations on the new surface.
This international award shines a light on the technical progress being made in Pakistan’s airport infrastructure. The recognition will help boost confidence in local engineering teams and encourage further investments in aviation development.
