The Perfect Couple now streaming on Netflix offers a stunning visual experience, featuring a sprawling 4,000-bedroom mansion set on a breathtaking stretch of US coastline. This opulent world, driven by generational wealth, showcases extravagant cashmere knits in impractical colors and endless picturesque views. Amid this splendor, a murder occurs with numerous suspects, each having a potential motive.
Nicole Kidman stars as Greer Garrison Winbury, a celebrated romantic novelist, and Liev Schreiber plays her husband of 29 years, Tag. The couple, along with their three sons—Thomas (Jack Reynor), a troubled figure; Benji (Billy Howle), a golden boy; and Will (Sam Nivola), seem ideal but are far from perfect. Benji’s upcoming wedding to Amelia (Eve Hewson), a woman from a less glamorous background, stirs Greer’s icy discontent. Greer’s passive-aggressive behavior manifests in her attempts to orchestrate the perfect wedding while publicly admiring the modest gift basket from Amelia’s parents and privately belittling the bride.
The drama intensifies with Thomas’s pregnant wife, Abby (Dakota Fanning), who excels at exposing weaknesses, and the wedding planner, Roger (Tim Bagley), who is dazzled by the wealth and privilege surrounding him. Roger’s enthusiasm for the couple’s extravagant lifestyle is evident as he exclaims, “They’re ‘I’m bored – let’s go buy a monkey’ rich! ‘Kill someone and get away with it’ rich.”
As the investigation unfolds, Detective Nikki Henry, played masterfully by Donna Lynne Champlin, emerges as the real star. Her performance is compelling as she subtly conveys her judgments about the wealthy suspects without compromising her investigation. Despite the local police chief Dan’s (Michael Beach) questionable coziness with the affluent family, Detective Henry remains focused on unraveling the case.
The Perfect Couple weaves a complex narrative with a steady stream of plot twists and reveals. Its engaging storyline makes it nearly impossible to stop at just one episode. Adapted by Jenna Lamia from Elin Hilderbrand’s novel, known for her beach reads, this series maintains the charm and escapism of the original book, delivering an entertaining and indulgent watch.
