WASHINGTON:
The House of Representatives passed a bill on Friday to boost security for former President Donald Trump following a recent assassination attempt. The Enhanced Presidential Security Act, introduced by Representatives Mike Lawler and Ritchie Torres, requires the Secret Service to maintain consistent standards for the number of agents protecting Presidents, Vice Presidents, and major candidates.
The bill passed with a 405-0 vote, though its fate in the Senate remains unclear. Torres and Lawler expressed gratitude for the unanimous support, emphasizing the bill’s goal to address security gaps for presidential candidates.
The vote came just five days after the Secret Service thwarted a second assassination attempt on Trump while he was golfing in West Palm Beach, Florida. The suspect, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, was spotted with a rifle near Trump’s golf course. Secret Service agents fired at Routh, who fled but was later arrested by local authorities.
This incident follows another attempt two months earlier, on July 13, when Trump was grazed by a bullet during a campaign rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired at Trump, but only grazed his right ear.
