In a recent statement that has drawn significant attention, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shehrbano Naqvi addressed the public regarding an alleged incident of rape involving a college student in Lahore. The case came to light following a social media post that sparked widespread protests in the city on Monday, igniting concerns about safety and justice for women.
In a video message released on Tuesday, ASP Naqvi urged individuals with any evidence related to the alleged incident to come forward. She emphasized the importance of concrete proof in pursuing legal action, highlighting that the girl at the center of the allegations was hospitalized ten days before the alleged rape occurred. ASP Naqvi further revealed that the girl’s family stated she sustained her injuries while preparing for school.
According to Naqvi, the girl’s father corroborated that the injuries were a result of a fall at home, which raises questions about the authenticity of the claims being circulated on social media. She pointed out that, without a formal complaint from the victim or her family, the police are limited in their ability to take action.
The ASP made it clear that the police would only proceed with an investigation if credible evidence is provided. “If anyone has evidence, come forward so that the police can take action,” she urged, stressing the necessity of accurate information in such sensitive cases.
Furthermore, ASP Naqvi mentioned that the medical reports pertaining to the girl’s hospital admission are available, suggesting that they could clarify the circumstances surrounding her injuries. She called on students who may be spreading rumors or unverified information to share any evidence they might possess, reinforcing the need for a responsible and informed discourse surrounding the incident.
The police department’s approach highlights the delicate nature of allegations of sexual violence and the critical importance of substantiated claims to ensure that justice is served while also protecting the rights and dignity of all individuals involved.
