The moon marking the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan 1446 Hijri has not been sighted in Pakistan, confirming that the first fast (Roza) will be observed on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, led by Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, convened a meeting in Peshawar on Friday, where it was officially declared that no reports of moon sightings had been received from any part of the country.
No Moon Sighting Across Pakistan
Various zonal moon-sighting committees also held meetings in different cities, including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Quetta, with representatives from:
✅ Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD)
✅ Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO)
Despite their efforts, no verifiable reports of a moon sighting were received from any region. Consequently, Ramadan will officially begin on the evening of Saturday, March 1, with the first Roza observed on Sunday, March 2.
Why Was the Moon Not Sighted?
According to Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), several atmospheric and astronomical factors contributed to the lack of visibility:
🔹 Cloudy Weather – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, experienced partly cloudy conditions, reducing visibility.
🔹 Moon’s Age – At sunset, the moon was approximately 12 hours old, making it difficult to spot.
🔹 Angular Separation – The moon-sun angular separation was around five degrees, another limiting factor for visibility.
SUPARCO’s Prediction Came True
Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) had previously forecast that Ramadan would begin on the evening of March 1, based on scientific calculations of moon visibility. Their prediction turned out to be accurate, as the crescent was not visible anywhere in the country.
Ramadan Preparations Begin
With the official announcement, Muslims across Pakistan are now preparing for a month of fasting, prayer, charity, and spiritual reflection. The first Taraweeh prayers will be offered on Saturday night (March 1), marking the beginning of this sacred month.
