Donald Trump calls India 'very big abuser' of trade ahead of meeting with PM Modi

At a Tuesday campaign stop, former US President Donald Trump declared that India was a “very big abuser” of the commercial relationship between the US and India. He also mentioned that he will be meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi the following week.

Speaking in Flint, Michigan, the Republican nominee for president in November provided no information on the location of their meeting. On September 21, US President Joe Biden will host a meeting in Delaware with leaders from Australia, India, and Japan. According to analysts, New Delhi is perceived by Washington as a counterbalance to China’s growing sway in the Asian region.

Trump ended up meeting with a few other foreign leaders who travelled to the US in previous months for summits and meetings with Biden. The Democratic Vice President Kamala opposes the Republican. According to polls, Trump and Harris—who is Indian—are in a close battle. In spite of his vague criticism of India’s trade policies, Trump referred to Modi as “fantastic.”

Warm ties existed between Trump and Modi during the prior president’s administration. In 2020, Modi hosted a massive rally for Trump in India coinciding with the opening of the biggest cricket stadium in the world. Wearing “Namaste Trump” hats, rallygoers welcomed the Republican.

During Modi’s 2019 US tour, Trump and Modi lavished each other with adulation at a “Howdy, Modi!” event in Texas that drew over 50,000 attendees.

Additionally, Modi has had positive relationships with Democratic presidents like as Joe Biden and Barack Obama. For him, the White House threw open the crimson carpet.
