Bollywood actress Ananya Panday recently shared her thoughts on performing item numbers in films, stating that she would consider it depending on the intent and portrayal of the dance.
In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Ananya emphasized the importance of empowerment and respect when it comes to such performances. She said, “There are many ways to approach item numbers, but as creatives, we have a responsibility to be aware of the message we are putting out there.”
Ananya explained that she would only take on a role if it empowered women and avoided over-sexualization or objectification. “If the girl in the song is in control, not being overly sexualized, and is respected, then I’d consider it,” she noted.
She further added, “It’s important to see it from the perspective where the woman holds power. There are ways to make something sexy without making it exploitative or objectifying. It’s about shifting the control to the woman, rather than the man.”
The actress also highlighted that objectification impacts men as well, pointing out examples where male actors are often required to take off their shirts for roles. She stressed the need for filmmakers and actors to be more mindful of the content they create and to avoid glorifying negative portrayals.
