Saoirse Ronan reveals she turned down Marvel's Yelena Belova role: “I can’t see myself doing Marvel”

Saoirse Ronan has addressed rumors about her potential involvement in Marvel’s Black Widow as Yelena Belova. In a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz asked Ronan about speculation that she was offered the role before it ultimately went to her Little Women co-star, Florence Pugh. Ronan playfully responded, “How did you hear about that?” suggesting there may be some truth to the rumor.

When further questioned about her thoughts on superhero films, Ronan stated, “I can’t see myself doing Marvel,” expressing her preference for exploring other types of projects, such as a James Bond film. While she appreciates the brilliance of Marvel productions, she acknowledged the comfort of knowing a film will attract a wide audience, especially given today’s cinematic landscape. Ronan also expressed interest in taking part in large-scale projects like Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and even musicals, indicating her ambition to diversify her acting career.

Florence Pugh has taken on the role of Yelena Belova, a skilled spy and assassin, in the 2021 Black Widow film and the Disney+ series Hawkeye. She is set to reprise her role in the upcoming film Thunderbolts, scheduled for release on May 2, 2025. Ronan’s remarks add to the ongoing conversation about the choices actors make in an ever-evolving entertainment industry, particularly regarding superhero franchises.
