Civilised attitude needed to stop food wastage, urges Maryam Nawaz

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz used the platform of World Food Day to advocate for responsible food use and an end to wastage. In her message, she emphasized the global crisis of food insecurity affecting millions and underscored the shocking reality of billions of tons of food wasted annually. Maryam Nawaz called for a cultural shift towards respecting the blessing of food, highlighting that Islam teaches us the value of sustenance and expressly forbids wastefulness.

She noted that food wastage in homes, restaurants, and large gatherings often stems from carelessness and lack of awareness. To address this, she announced that the “one-dish policy” is now being strictly implemented across Punjab. This policy, which limits the number of dishes served at events and gatherings, is part of a broader government effort to reduce food waste, particularly in settings prone to excess. Violations of this policy will face strict action, she warned, adding that a respectful and conscious attitude toward food is vital.

In her address, Maryam Nawaz passionately urged the public to adopt responsible habits, saying, “Let’s build a society where everyone has access to food.” She encouraged citizens to be mindful of their consumption and to work toward a future where safe, quality food is available to future generations.

About World Food Day:

Observed every year on October 16, World Food Day highlights the pressing issue of hunger and the need for sustainable food systems. Established by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1945, this day is dedicated to promoting awareness and action on behalf of food security. This year’s theme, “Right to food for a better life and a better future,” calls for greater equity in food access and a commitment to sustainable practices to ensure everyone’s basic right to food. Organizations such as the World Food Programme, the World Health Organization, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development actively support the day’s goals.
