Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Announces Winter Electricity Relief Package: Major Savings for Domestic, Industrial, and Commercial Consumers
In a significant move aimed at reducing energy costs and boosting economic activity, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has introduced a new electricity relief package, set to run from December 2024 through February 2025. Announced during a ceremony commemorating Allama Muhammad Iqbal’s birth anniversary in Islamabad, the package offers substantial per-unit savings for domestic, industrial, and commercial consumers who increase their electricity usage during winter months.
This relief package is intended to encourage higher electricity usage when demand typically drops due to winter and an increasing shift to solar energy. By incentivizing consumption, the government aims to minimize capacity payments made to independent power producers (IPPs), which must be paid whether or not these plants produce power.
Prime Minister Shehbaz underscored the broader economic impact of this initiative, projecting that it would strengthen Pakistan’s economy by promoting agriculture, industry, business, and exports. He expressed gratitude to the IMF for approving the relief package, acknowledging the role of his cabinet and officials in bringing this plan to fruition. He further emphasized the government’s vision for a robust economy through investments in technology, vocational training, and emerging fields for Pakistan’s youth.
Highlighting additional economic achievements, the Prime Minister noted a substantial decrease in inflation, now at 6.7% from 32%, and a drop in the policy rate to 15%. He expressed optimism that these indicators would fuel investment, agriculture, exports, and new opportunities for Pakistan’s citizens.
In his address, Shehbaz also honored the legacy of Allama Iqbal, whose philosophical contributions continue to inspire the nation’s ambition and resilience. He encouraged the youth to embrace values of determination, courage, and compassion, envisioning a promising future for Pakistan.
With this package, the government is making strategic use of the winter months to stimulate economic progress across all sectors, strengthening Pakistan’s energy consumption, minimizing costs, and supporting overall economic stability.
