Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby Resigns Amid Criticism Over Handling of Abuse Allegations

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who holds the highest position within the Church of England and the Anglican Communion, has announced his resignation amidst backlash over his handling of abuse cases within the church. Welby, who famously officiated the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and led the coronation of King Charles III, will be stepping down in light of revelations from a recent report on how the church addressed allegations of abuse involving the late John Smyth, a former church-camp operator.

The independent Makin Report, released last Friday, uncovered that Smyth reportedly abused up to 130 boys over several decades, in both Britain and Africa. Smyth’s shocking actions, which were first brought to Welby’s attention in 2013, sparked renewed criticism of the church’s lack of transparency and response. Welby admitted he initially trusted that police involvement would lead to an “appropriate resolution,” but the prolonged silence has now led to calls for accountability. The report exposed the church’s failure to act promptly, underscoring a history of silence and inaction that affected the lives of many young boys.

In his resignation statement, Welby expressed deep regret, saying, “It is very clear that I must take personal and institutional responsibility for the long and re-traumatizing period between 2013 and 2024.”

The report’s findings revealed a painful history of unaddressed abuses and cover-ups, ultimately leading to Welby’s decision to step down after facing public and institutional pressure. Precise details of Welby’s departure are yet to be confirmed, as his office reviews his remaining commitments. The Archbishop’s resignation reflects the church’s acknowledgment of the need for a renewed approach to addressing historical abuses and ensuring transparency for the future.
