Protester Deaths in Islamabad: Security Sources Deny Claims Amid Chaos
Posted on November 27, 2024 by News Desk
The aftermath of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest in Islamabad has become a contentious topic, with conflicting reports surrounding the events of Tuesday night. Security sources have categorically denied claims circulating on social media about the deaths of protesters during the operation, labeling them as “false and fabricated.”
Security Sources Refute Death Reports
According to security officials, no firearms were used by law enforcement agencies, and the reports of protesters’ deaths due to shelling or police action are baseless. They further stated that these rumors were a deliberate attempt to mask failures within PTI’s protest management.
Hospital Reports Paint a Grim Picture
Despite these denials, reports from Islamabad hospitals suggest otherwise. Medical records indicate that clashes resulted in 10 deaths and 71 injuries, including both civilians and security personnel.
- Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS): Received seven bodies (four security personnel, three civilians) and treated 27 injured police officers and 14 civilians.
- Poly Clinic: Confirmed three deaths and treated 28 injured civilians.
- CDA Hospital: Reported two injuries, including one gunshot victim and another affected by tear gas.
PTI’s Allegations of Heavy-Handedness
PTI spokespersons have accused authorities of excessive force, alleging that “unarmed protesters were met with a barrage of bullets.” This claim, coupled with reports of severe injuries among protesters, has fueled outrage within PTI’s ranks.
Following the crackdown, PTI canceled its protest in Islamabad. The party has announced that its next course of action will be decided after discussions with the founding chairman and core committee.
Government Commends Law Enforcement Efforts
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi praised law enforcement agencies for effectively dispersing the D-Chowk protest and ensuring order in sensitive areas of Islamabad.
“We thank Allah for the failure of this subversive conspiracy. Pakistan and its people have emerged victorious,” Naqvi stated.
Law enforcement agencies have reopened key roads and started clearing debris from affected areas, particularly in the Red Zone, which houses several government buildings.
Cleaning Operations Underway in Islamabad
The streets, which were crowded with protesters, are now being restored. Containers are being removed, and cleaning operations are in full swing to clear remnants of the demonstrations, such as scattered belongings and abandoned vehicles.
Deputy Commissioner Irfan Memon assured the public:
“All roadblocks will be removed, and areas will be cleaned up before the morning.”
A City Caught in Conflict
As the dust settles, Islamabad reflects on the toll of these protests. While conflicting narratives persist, the city is gradually returning to normalcy.
