A Milestone in Medical Innovation – Pakistan's First Genetic Molecular Laboratory

Karachi:
In a groundbreaking development for the medical field in Pakistan, the country’s first genetic molecular laboratory has been inaugurated at Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU). This cutting-edge facility, established in collaboration with the Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America (APPNA), aims to revolutionize the early detection and diagnosis of genetic and hereditary conditions in both infants and adults.

The state-of-the-art laboratory is designed to provide solutions for diagnosing physical and mental disabilities in premature babies while also identifying genetic defects that may cause health issues later in life. By leveraging advanced genetic technology, the lab aspires to transform the landscape of medical diagnostics in Pakistan.

Inauguration Ceremony Highlights

The launch event, held at the Karachi Press Club, saw the presence of eminent medical professionals and academics. Among them were APPNA President Dr. Asif Mohiuddin, General Secretary Dr. Rizwan Naeem, Vice Chancellor of JSMU Prof. Amjad Siraj Memon, and Vice Chancellor of Dow University Prof. Dr. Saeed Qureshi.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Asif Mohiuddin remarked, “This laboratory is a significant step toward modernizing healthcare in Pakistan. By detecting genetic disorders and identifying potential health risks in infants and children, we can ensure timely interventions to improve their quality of life.”

Revolutionary Capabilities

Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the lab has the capacity to:

  • Identify genetic conditions in newborns, including premature babies.
  • Predict future health risks based on genetic markers.
  • Diagnose hereditary disorders in children and adults.
  • Determine a child’s genetic makeup, including gender identification through fluid analysis from the mother’s womb.

According to Prof. Amjad Siraj Memon, the lab is poised to set new standards in medical diagnostics by enabling early detection and timely interventions.

This initiative marks a new era in Pakistan’s medical landscape, highlighting the critical role of collaboration between local institutions and international organizations like APPNA. The lab is expected to pave the way for further advancements in genetic research and diagnostics in the country.
