In a significant step toward preserving our native bird species, Lahore’s Wildlife Department has intensified its efforts to tackle the illegal bird trade. Spearheaded by Deputy Director of Wildlife, Dr. Ghulam Rasool Awan, this campaign has already resulted in the arrest of two more illegal bird sellers within Lahore city limits, bringing the total arrests to four in just 24 hours.
During the operation, hundreds of harmless native birds—such as sparrows, robins, and wagtails—were rescued from these sellers. These species, crucial to maintaining ecological balance, face increasing threats due to illegal hunting and trade.
The Wildlife Department has made an urgent appeal to the public to avoid purchasing birds from unauthorized sellers and actively support their efforts. By refusing to buy from these sources, citizens can contribute to the protection of these innocent creatures.
To further empower the public in this mission, the department has launched a dedicated WhatsApp number (0332-4108449) where concerned citizens can report illegal bird-selling activities. This collaborative effort between the authorities and the community aims to preserve Lahore’s rich biodiversity.
Case of Social Media Personality Rajab Butt
In a separate development, popular YouTuber Rajab Butt has been sentenced for keeping a lion cub in violation of wildlife laws. Following a complaint by the Punjab Wildlife Department, Butt was arrested last month during a joint raid conducted by wildlife officials and police.
The court has sentenced Rajab Butt to one year of community service under the supervision of a probation officer. As part of his sentence, he is required to create monthly vlogs focused on animal protection and rights. These vlogs, which will be approved by a probation officer, aim to spread awareness about the importance of animal rights.
The court has also emphasized that Butt must attend hearings if summoned and comply with all directives. Failure to adhere to these guidelines may lead to further legal consequences.
