A romantic getaway turned into a heartbreaking tragedy as a newlywed couple from Karachi lost their lives due to suffocation in Neelum Valley. The victims, identified as 25-year-old Syed Muhammad Taha, a mechanical engineer, and his 22-year-old wife, Dua Zahra, a business administration student, were found dead in their guesthouse room after inhaling toxic gas from a heater.
The Unfortunate Incident
The couple had embarked on their honeymoon trip to Neelum Valley, a picturesque destination known for its breathtaking landscapes and freezing temperatures. They checked into a guesthouse approximately 145 kilometers from Muzaffarabad, unaware of the tragic fate awaiting them.
With temperatures plummeting to minus 10 degrees Celsius, the couple turned on a gas heater to stay warm. However, they made the fatal mistake of sealing their room completely by shutting all windows and doors. According to officials, the guesthouse staff had advised them to keep the gas heater outside after a certain period, but they did not heed the warning.
Discovery of the Tragedy
On the morning of February 17, the guesthouse staff became alarmed when the couple did not respond to repeated knocks on the door. Concerned, they alerted the District Disaster Management Authority, who later forced their way inside.
What they found was utterly devastating—Dua Zahra was lying unconscious on the bed, while Syed Muhammad Taha had collapsed on the floor. They had succumbed to suffocation due to the accumulation of gas in the room.
Final Journey Home
The authorities moved the couple’s bodies to Muzaffarabad for legal formalities before transferring them to Islamabad Airport. From there, the remains were transported to Karachi via a flight at 4 p.m. The Edhi Foundation took charge of further arrangements, ensuring the bodies were delivered to their home in Malir’s Jafar Tayyar area, where grieving family members awaited their return.
A Short-Lived Celebration of Love
Taha and Dua had only recently begun their married life, having tied the knot on February 4. Their walima (wedding reception) was held on February 8, and they had set off on their honeymoon journey to Neelum Valley on February 11.
According to their relatives, the couple last spoke to their family members at around 9 p.m. on Friday, expressing their excitement for the next leg of their trip. They were scheduled to check out of the guesthouse on Saturday morning, but fate had other plans.
Safety Concerns and Awareness
This tragic incident once again highlights the dangers of gas heaters in enclosed spaces. Many tourists visiting colder regions rely on gas cylinders and heaters, often unaware of the risks associated with carbon monoxide poisoning. Experts advise:
- Always ensure proper ventilation when using gas heaters.
- Never leave gas appliances running overnight in a closed space.
- Follow the safety guidelines provided by accommodation staff.
- If experiencing dizziness or nausea, immediately move to fresh air.
A Heartbreaking Reminder
The tragic deaths of Syed Muhammad Taha and Dua Zahra have left their loved ones in shock. What was meant to be a joyful and memorable honeymoon turned into an unimaginable loss. As their families mourn, their story serves as a harrowing reminder of how small mistakes can lead to catastrophic consequences.
May their souls rest in peace.
