Sindh Government Announces Free ‘Pink Scooters’ for Women: A Major Step Towards Women’s Empowerment

The Sindh government has unveiled a transformative initiative to promote women’s mobility and independence by distributing free ‘pink scooters’ through a lottery system. This initiative, announced by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, aligns with the provincial government’s ongoing commitment to empowering female commuters.

A Step Towards Women’s Independence

The pink scooter scheme follows the successful launch of the ‘Pink Bus’ service in 2023, which was designed to provide safe and comfortable public transport for women. Building on this success, the government has now introduced another progressive initiative to ensure that women have independent and secure travel options.

“A driving licence is mandatory for women to participate in the scheme,” stated Memon during a press conference in Karachi. The lucky draw event will be held openly, ensuring a transparent selection process for beneficiaries.

Introduction of ‘Pink Taxi’ Service

In addition to the pink scooters, Memon also announced plans to introduce a ‘pink taxi’ service, where women will drive the taxis, providing another safe and reliable transportation alternative. This initiative aims to encourage female employment in the transportation sector and enhance women’s participation in the workforce.

Unified Vehicle Registration System

In a related announcement, Memon revealed that all vehicles in Sindh will now be registered under a unified system. This decision aims to standardize vehicle registration processes across the province and improve regulatory oversight.

With Karachi facing a concerning rise in road accidents—over 130 deaths and 1,800 injuries reported this year—the government has also formed a committee to address road safety concerns. Additionally, revenue generated from auctioning vehicle number plates will now be transferred to the provincial government, ensuring better financial management for road safety initiatives.

Challenges and the Call for Federal Support

Memon also criticized the federal government for failing to fulfill a promise made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to provide 180 buses for Karachi. “We will write a letter to the Prime Minister, urging him to fulfill his promise,” he asserted.

Despite these challenges, the Sindh cabinet has approved several key infrastructure projects, including:

  • Dow Science Foundation’s establishment
  • Additional buses for the province
  • K-IV water project for Keenjhar Lake
  • Karachi Water and Sewerage Line project

These developments reflect the Sindh government’s continued efforts to improve the province’s transport and infrastructure.

Conclusion

The launch of free pink scooters and plans for a pink taxi service mark a significant milestone in ensuring women’s independence in Sindh. By prioritizing female mobility and addressing road safety issues, the government is taking crucial steps toward a safer and more inclusive transportation system.
