The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee has officially announced that Eid ul Azha 2025 in Pakistan will be celebrated on Saturday, June 7. The confirmation came following a meeting held in Islamabad on Tuesday, chaired by Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad.
According to the committee, the Zil Hajj moon was not sighted in any part of the country on Tuesday, May 28. As a result, Thursday, May 29 will be observed as the first day of Zil Hajj, setting the date for Eid ul Azha on the 10th of Zil Hajj—Saturday, June 7.
Weather Conditions Impact Moon Sighting in Pakistan
Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad shared during the press briefing that weather conditions across the country hindered moon sighting efforts. Cloudy skies in several regions made it difficult to observe the crescent moon, despite coordinated efforts by national and regional teams.
Representatives from SUPARCO (Pakistan’s space agency) and the Meteorological Department participated in the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee’s meeting, providing technical support to verify moon visibility. Despite their efforts, no credible moon sighting testimonies were reported, leading to the decision to mark May 29 as the first day of Zil Hajj.
Zonal Committee Meetings Held Nationwide
In addition to the main session in Islamabad, zonal meetings were held simultaneously in major cities including Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, and Peshawar. Each zonal committee reported the absence of moon sightings from their respective regions, reinforcing the national consensus on the date.
The widespread collaboration between religious scholars, astronomers, and meteorological experts showcases Pakistan’s comprehensive moon sighting process for confirming key Islamic dates.
Saudi Arabia Declares Eid on June 6, Hajj on June 5
While Pakistan will celebrate Eid on June 7, Saudi Arabia has declared Friday, June 6 as the first day of Eid ul Azha. The announcement followed the successful sighting of the Zil Hajj crescent on Tuesday, May 27.
As a result, Hajj rituals will take place on Thursday, June 5, with pilgrims from across the globe gathering in Makkah for the sacred event. Other Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, have also confirmed Eid on June 6, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s calendar.
This slight variation in Eid dates is common due to regional moon sighting practices and time zone differences, especially between South Asia and the Middle East.
Significance of Eid ul Azha in the Islamic Calendar
Eid ul Azha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the two major Islamic festivals. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command.
Muslims around the world celebrate this day with special prayers, sacrifice of animals, and acts of charity. It also coincides with the conclusion of Hajj—the annual pilgrimage to Makkah—one of the five pillars of Islam.
Prepare for Eid ul Azha 2025 in Pakistan
With the date now confirmed, families across Pakistan are beginning preparations for Qurbani, arranging animal purchases, and planning gatherings. As the festive day approaches, markets are expected to be bustling with activity, from sacrificial animal sales to Eid outfit shopping.
Let’s ensure we celebrate this spiritual occasion with gratitude, humility, and generosity towards those in need.
