Punjab Takes Strict Action Against Sectarian Social Media Posts: 74 Arrested

In a firm and swift response to growing online hate speech, the Punjab Home Department has reported the arrest of 74 individuals for posting inflammatory and sectarian content on social media platforms. The move comes as part of a broader crackdown during the holy month of Muharram, aimed at curbing online provocation that could lead to unrest or violence.

Cyber Patrolling Intensifies to Curb Online Hate

According to the Home Department’s spokesperson, a total of 932 social media links have been flagged and forwarded to the Cyber Patrolling Cell. The department has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of incitement or hate speech shared online, particularly content that stokes sectarian tensions.

The Cyber Patrolling Cell has been actively monitoring platforms such as Facebook, Twitter (X), TikTok, and WhatsApp for content that violates public peace or religious harmony. Immediate action is being taken against those who spread religious hatred, with offenders facing arrest, account suspension, and legal prosecution.

Clear Directives from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari confirmed that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has issued strict directives to tackle social media abuse during Muharram. In a recent press conference, Bokhari emphasized that the government will not tolerate any online activity that encourages violence, false information, or hate-driven agendas.

Bokhari announced the formation of a dedicated cyber security task force working in collaboration with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). This unit is specifically tasked with the real-time tracking and reporting of problematic content and user behavior.

Citizens Advised to Avoid Sharing Sectarian Content

The government has strongly urged the public to exercise caution when posting or sharing content related to religion or Muharram. Authorities warn that even resharing provocative material can lead to serious consequences. The focus remains on preserving peace and unity in a month that holds sacred significance for millions of Pakistanis.
