Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has taken a bold step toward a cleaner and greener future by launching the Waste to Value project. This initiative, started under the Suthra Punjab Programme, focuses on converting biodegradable animal waste into biogas a clean and renewable energy source.
For the first time ever, a successful experiment of biogas production from animal waste has been carried out at Lakhodair, Lahore. During a recent briefing, CM Maryam Nawaz shared her enthusiasm about the project, saying that it marks a historic milestone in waste management for Punjab.
According to the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC), the experiment showed that 25,000 kilograms of biogas can be generated from just 1,000 metric tonnes of biodegradable animal waste. This means that not only can the project help reduce pollution, but it can also become a major source of clean energy in the province.
Every year, massive amounts of animal waste are produced during Eid-ul-Azha. By turning this waste into biogas, the government expects to earn Rs7 million in revenue. This initiative not only solves the issue of waste disposal but also creates financial opportunities for the province.
Officials revealed that by rehabilitating the waste disposal site, Punjab can earn 275,000 carbon credits and generate around $4.2 million per year. These carbon credits can be traded internationally, further boosting the province’s green economy.
The Waste to Value project shows how smart planning and innovation can solve two problems at once: waste management and clean energy needs. It supports both sustainability and economic growth, setting an example for other cities and provinces to follow.
CM Maryam Nawaz has instructed the concerned departments to start full-scale operations immediately under the Suthra Punjab Programme. With this direction, the project is expected to expand quickly, benefitting more areas across the province.
