Three financial fraud suspects arrested for posing as bank employees in Islamabad

Three people who were part of an organised organisation that committed financial fraud were taken into custody in Islamabad after they pretended to be bank workers.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)’s Cyber Crime Circle made the arrests as part of a large-scale campaign against online financial crimes.

After a thorough investigation, the suspects, Muhammad Adnan, Shahbaz Akhtar, and Muhammad Irfan, were captured. The FIA claims that the three made fake contacts with different citizens while posing as bank employees. They succeeded in gaining access to private financial data and fraudulently opened three different accounts, taking more than Rs1.9 million in total.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who has been actively supervising a crackdown on cybercriminal activity, gave the order for the operation. The FIA has begun an investigation to find other gang members who might be engaged in comparable fraudulent operations in addition to the arrests.

The suspects, who are currently being questioned further, were captured thanks in large part to the utilisation of cutting-edge equipment. A female member of a group that targeted the bank accounts of individuals through internet fraud was apprehended by the FIA earlier this year in a case similar to this one.

The gang members conned a lot of people out of large sums of money.

FIA investigators said that the group developed the plan by taking advantage of holes in internet banking systems, which allowed them to move money without authorisation from victims’ accounts to their own.

The accused woman used to use her cell phone to call the customers’ banks in order to obtain the necessary information to carry out fraudulent transactions.

Through their fraudulent actions, the gang has obtained millions of rupees illegally, as revealed by the agency’s ongoing investigation into their activities.

Important information was provided to the agency by the arrested woman, including her participation in the withdrawal and transfer of Rs. 1,880,000 from the account of a single bank customer. The suspect’s further admissions shed light on the gang’s strategy, which depended on cunning and technological prowess.

To trick victims, the thieves pretended to be bank representatives by using audio recordings that looked like real bank calls and a variety of proxies. Within 48 hours of breaking into a target’s account, the gang moved substantial amounts of money to accounts under control in order to avoid being discovered.
