SINDH’S PLASTIC BOTTLE BAN STRUGGLES WITH ENFORCEMENT IN GOVT OFFICES

The Sindh government forbade the use of plastic water bottles in government buildings, however there is still inconsistent enforcement. The Chief Minister’s Secretariat has partially enforced the ban, while other government offices—including those in the Sindh Secretariat—retain plastic bottles, according to an investigation conducted by The Express Tribune.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a worker for the Livestock Department, which is situated close to the Sindh Assembly, verified that the prohibition has not been implemented in the majority of government buildings. Karachi-based environmental activist Mahmood Alam Khalid emphasised the significance of this effort to lessen pollution. He did point out that rigorous execution is necessary for it to be successful.
Khalid told Express that “similar bans were imposed in federal offices, but enforcement has been lacking there as well.” According to Muhammad Toheed, Associate Director of IBA’s Urban Lab, there won’t be a significant decrease in environmental pollution even if the ban is implemented in government buildings.
He made the observation that most people use plastic bottles in restaurants and private offices. Toheed claimed the prohibition ought to apply to the private sector in order to have a significant effect. A US International Trade Administration report states that Karachi alone produces 16,500 tonnes of rubbish each day, out of Pakistan’s weekly production of 87,000 tonnes of solid waste.
Plastic garbage is the second most prevalent type of waste in the city, after kitchen waste, according to environmental activist Afaaq Bhatti from Karachi.
