Twenty-five years after Dil Chahta Hai first arrived in cinemas, a surprising behind-the-scenes detail about one of its memorable scenes has come to light.
The revelation concerns Aamir Khan and Akshaye Khanna, whose characters, Aakash and Sid, share a tense moment in the film. According to director Farhan Akhtar, the slaps seen in the scene were not simply acted out for the camera. Aamir actually received them during filming.

As the team reflected on the making of Dil Chahta Hai to mark its 25th anniversary, Farhan Akhtar recalled how the confrontation between Aakash and Sid was filmed.
Akshaye Khanna’s character had to slap Aamir Khan’s Aakash. What makes the story particularly surprising is that the production initially planned to use a real slap only for the wide shot.
However, Aamir reportedly chose to continue with genuine slaps for the remaining takes. The actor felt that experiencing the physical reaction helped him stay connected to the emotional intensity of the scene.
The sequence required multiple takes because it was filmed from different camera angles. According to the revelation, Aamir was slapped 17 times, with Akshaye delivering the hit for each take.
The physical impact was reportedly visible by the end of filming. Aamir’s face had developed swelling on one side, along with noticeable marks from the repeated slaps.
What appears on screen as a brief dramatic exchange therefore involved considerably more physical commitment behind the camera.
Farhan also shared another unusual detail about how the scene was staged.
He instructed Akshaye Khanna to slap Aamir slightly before the expected moment. The idea was to prevent Aamir from anticipating the action and to capture a more genuine expression of surprise on camera.
That approach was intended to make Aakash’s reaction feel spontaneous rather than rehearsed.
Dil Chahta Hai remains an important film in the careers of Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanna, and Farhan Akhtar. Its 25th anniversary has now given audiences an opportunity to look back not only at the film itself but also at the unusual efforts that went into creating its memorable moments.
The revelation about Aamir’s 17 real slaps adds an unexpected behind-the-scenes chapter to a film that continues to be remembered decades after its release.
