Governor Punjab should communicate his concerns in writing: CM Punjab

If Governor Punjab has concerns about the appointments of Vice Chancellors, he should communicate those in writing, and the government will address his issues sincerely, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said in an interview with The Express Tribune, aiming to ease tensions.

The Governor has expressed objections to the appointment process for Vice Chancellors at Punjab Sector Universities. In response, CM Maryam Nawaz stated that the candidates had been thoroughly vetted and that the best individuals were selected for the roles. However, she added that if the Governor believes there were any oversights, his office should formally inform them, and they would investigate.

Maryam emphasized the importance of collaboration with the entire state machinery to avoid any misunderstandings in Punjab.

Some media outlets reported that she accused the Governor of attempting to appoint a favored candidate for the VC position, but this was denied by the Information Minister.

Earlier this week, Governor Sardar Saleem Haider told The Express Tribune that he had two main objections regarding the VC appointments: a lack of transparency in the process and failure to adhere to the proper legal procedures for selection. He explained that the law mandates the government, through a search committee, to provide three names in alphabetical order, leaving the final selection to the Governor. He criticized the practice of sending only one name from each university, asserting that his office should not be treated as a mere post office and that a proper scrutiny process must be followed.

Regarding a recent summary that contravened the law, he noted that the usual timeline for provincial legislation should not apply in this case.

When asked about Party President Nawaz Sharif’s upcoming visit to London, CM Maryam Nawaz clarified that it was for a routine medical checkup and that he is expected to return within ten days after the procedure.
