Moo Deng, the pygmy hippo who skyrocketed to fame with millions of online followers, may now be gaining a more troublesome reputation.
In late September, a video surfaced showing Moo Deng aggressively biting her caretaker as he attempted to hose her down in her enclosure. Uploaded to a fan page, the video quickly racked up over 6 million views, sparking mixed reactions.
One viewer called the hippo “kind of mean,” while another joked, “Baby girl is always choosing violence.” Though known for her cute and playful behavior, this incident has sparked a debate about her temperament.
Zoo staff have expressed concerns about the impact Moo Deng’s fame is having on both the hippo and her visitors. Some fans, eager for the perfect photo, have reportedly thrown objects or splashed water at her, adding to the stress of the young animal.
Moo Deng’s popularity even led to a mention on “Saturday Night Live” during a Weekend Update segment.
However, this latest video has raised questions about whether her viral fame might be at risk, as she becomes known for more than just her adorable antics.
