Kat Graham describes playing Diana Ross in Michael Jackson biopic as “surreal”

Kat Graham, best known for her role in The Vampire Diaries, is thrilled to take on the role of the legendary Diana Ross in the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, set for release on April 18, 2025. Jaafar Jackson will portray Michael Jackson in the film, which chronicles the King of Pop’s extraordinary life and career.

Speaking at the 2024 TIME100 Next event, Graham, 35, described the experience of embodying Ross as “surreal.” With a smile, she joked, “The hair’s a little bigger,” but soon reflected on the role’s impact, saying, “Finding out I was cast was very, very surreal.”

The role holds personal meaning for Graham, who has a 20-year friendship with Quincy Jones, a music legend closely connected to Jackson.

In the film, Kendrick Sampson plays Jones, creating what Graham calls a “full-circle” experience. “Seeing my friend Kendrick as Quincy, someone who’s been like a father to me, felt incredibly special,” she shared.

Graham admitted she never imagined playing Diana Ross, humorously adding, “Maybe in the shower or in your car. I didn’t think I’d get it.” Yet, she’s honored to represent Ross’s legacy, highlighting her influence on music and the Civil Rights movement.

In addition to Graham, the film stars Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson and Nia Long as Katherine Jackson. Although she faces moments of “imposter syndrome,” Graham is eager for audiences to experience this tribute to Michael Jackson and the icons who shaped his life, promising “a lot of good music.”
