UK health officials express alarm over rising Covid cases linked to new variant

Covid-19 hospitalizations in Britain have surged at an “alarming” rate, driven by the new XEC variant, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Recent data from UKHSA reveals that hospital admissions for patients testing positive for the XEC variant increased to 4.5 per 100,000 people in the week ending October 6, up from 3.7 the previous week. The North East region reported the highest admission rates, with 8.12 per 100,000, while rates among those aged 85 and older have risen to 52.48 per 100,000.

First detected in Germany in June, the XEC variant has since been identified in the United States, Denmark, and other countries. This variant combines characteristics of the KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 variants, presenting symptoms similar to other Covid strains, such as fatigue, headaches, sore throats, and fevers.

As a sub-variant of the Omicron lineage, XEC carries spike protein mutations that improve its ability to bind to human cells, including specific changes on phenylalanine, leucine, arginine, and threonine amino acids. The KP.3.3 subvariant, in particular, has a mutation enhancing its attachment to cells, making it more transmissible.

Public health officials recommend staying current with Covid-19 vaccines and booster shots for optimal protection against severe illness. The NHS has started administering autumn boosters to high-risk groups, including those over 65, individuals six months to 64 years with health conditions (including pregnant women), care home residents, and frontline NHS and social care workers.
