The Lahore Police have taken a strong stance against aerial firing, weapons display, and their promotion on social media ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations. In a significant move, the police have established a Cyber Squad to monitor and control these dangerous activities, ensuring the safety of citizens during the festive season.
According to DIG Operations Lahore, Faisal Kamran, a comprehensive action plan has been put in place. This initiative includes:
- Special Cyber Squad: This unit is tasked with tracking down individuals promoting or engaging in illegal activities such as aerial firing and weapons display on social media platforms.
- On-Ground Police Teams: Special teams will be deployed at hotspots across Lahore, particularly areas with high activity during Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Strict Legal Action
DIG Kamran emphasized the gravity of the issue and reiterated that immediate legal action will be taken against offenders. Individuals involved in aerial firing not only face imprisonment but also legal cases. He highlighted that stray bullets from celebratory aerial firing have tragically caused the loss of innocent lives.
In 2023 alone:
- 831 individuals involved in aerial firing and displaying weapons have been sent to jail.
- 505 cases have been registered.
The DIG urged citizens, “Do not turn your celebrations into mourning. Without public cooperation, it is impossible to stop this heinous act of aerial firing. Citizens are urged to report any criminal activities in their surroundings by calling 15.”
Influencers Under Scrutiny
The police are also cracking down on influencers and content creators involved in promoting firearms on social media. A recent example is YouTuber Rajab Butt, who was arrested in collaboration with the Wildlife Department for displaying firearms and keeping a lion cub at his residence. The arrest followed a viral video showing Rajab receiving the cub as a wedding gift, raising concerns about the illegal possession of wildlife.
While Rajab Butt was released on personal surety, the authorities remain vigilant. This incident underscores the commitment of the police to ensure that illegal activities and reckless displays of firearms do not glamorize violence or lawlessness.
A Safer, Happier New Year
The Lahore Police urge the public to play their role in creating a safer community. Citizens are encouraged to report violations and cooperate with authorities to ensure that celebrations remain joyous and incident-free.
