Saudi Arabia’s First Hydrogen-Powered Bus Hits the Roads

Saudi Arabia has taken a groundbreaking step toward sustainability by launching the trial of its first hydrogen-powered bus, a move aligned with Saudi Vision 2030’s commitment to environmental sustainability and innovative technologies.
The Inauguration
On December 5, 2023, Al-Ahsa Governor Prince Saud bin Talal bin Badr inaugurated the hydrogen-powered bus trial in the presence of notable dignitaries, including Dr. Rumaih bin Mohammed Al-Rumaih, Vice Minister of Transport and Logistic Services, and acting President of the Transport General Authority (TGA). The event included an introductory video highlighting the advanced technology behind hydrogen buses, including their fueling process, safety standards, and significant role in reducing carbon emissions.
Key Features of the Bus
- Range: Travels up to 635 kilometers on a single charge.
- Capacity: Accommodates 45 passengers.
- Route: Connects Dammam with Al-Ahsa Governorate, covering 359 kilometers daily.

The project exemplifies collaboration between government entities and private organizations.
- Al-Majdouie-Hyundai: Supplier of the hydrogen-powered bus.
- Saudi Aramco & Air Products: Supervisors and operators of the hydrogen fueling station.
- Abdullah Hashim Company: Providers of hydrogen gas through specialized tankers.
Supporting Saudi Vision 2030
Prince Saud lauded this milestone as a transformative step for Al-Ahsa, making it a hub for pioneering eco-friendly transportation initiatives. The hydrogen-powered bus trial is part of a larger framework of sustainable transportation developments, including hydrogen-powered trains and taxis, under the Saudi Green Initiative.
