In a significant step towards fostering economic growth and enhancing connectivity, Pakistan and China have reached an agreement to construct an expressway linking Gwadar Port with the newly established Gwadar International Airport. This development was announced during high-level discussions between Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, and China’s Vice Minister of Transport, Li Ying, in Beijing.

Key Highlights of the Agreement:

  1. New Infrastructure Projects:
    Alongside the expressway, the two nations will conduct feasibility studies for several new motorways, including the Mirpur-Muzaffarabad and Karachi-Hyderabad routes. These initiatives aim to boost regional connectivity and further Pakistan’s integration into the Belt and Road Initiative.
  2. Transformative Impact of CPEC:
    Minister Ahsan Iqbal lauded China’s contributions to Pakistan’s infrastructure development, citing the successes of the Multan-Sukkur Motorway and Hazara Expressway. These projects have significantly reduced travel times and stimulated economic activity across the nation.
  3. Future Prospects:
    • Expedited Major Projects: Efforts will focus on the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway, ML-1 railway upgrade, and Karakoram Highway Phase II.
    • Mineral Corridor Development: Proposals for the Mashkhel-Panjgur Highway aim to unlock Balochistan’s mineral wealth, driving regional growth.
  4. Collaboration in Space Technology:
    During a meeting with Ms. Wang Shunning, President of the Export-Import Bank of China, Minister Iqbal highlighted Pakistan’s economic recovery and the importance of ongoing support for projects like the Space Center and satellite initiatives.
