We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Bapsi Sidhwa, a beloved author and literary icon, on Wednesday in Houston, Texas. She was 86 years old.  

Sidhwa’s poignant novels and stories earned her international acclaim and a place among the most celebrated authors of her time. Her works, rich in historical and cultural context, explored themes of partition, identity, and the human spirit.  

One of her most notable works, ‘Cracking India,’ was inspired by her own experiences during the partition of India. This powerful novel explored the human cost of this historical event and continues to resonate with readers today.

Sidhwa’s collaborations with Indo-Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta further cemented her legacy. Their work together produced critically acclaimed films like ‘Earth’ (1998) and ‘Water’ (2005), which brought her stories to life on the big screen.
