Biden Turns Down Aafia Siddiqui’s Clemency Plea: IHC Updates

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) recently revealed that US President Joe Biden has rejected Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s clemency petition. This development adds another chapter to the highly debated case of Dr. Siddiqui, often referred to as “Lady Al-Qaeda,” who has been serving an 86-year sentence in the United States since 2010.

The IHC bench, led by Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, expressed frustration over the lack of progress and transparency in the efforts to secure her release. Petitioners disclosed that the United States also turned down a prisoner exchange proposal, adding to the challenges faced by Siddiqui’s advocates.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs submitted its report but was criticized for not addressing the matter effectively. Justice Sardar Ejaz made a pointed remark, criticizing the disparity in Biden’s decision-making. While the US president pardoned his son, clemency was denied to a Pakistani citizen.

Who is Dr. Aafia Siddiqui?

Dr. Siddiqui’s case is shrouded in controversy. Following her arrest in Afghanistan in 2008, she was accused of plotting attacks against the US. During her detention, she allegedly attempted to shoot US officials, resulting in her conviction. However, her supporters argue that her trial was unfair and question the evidence presented against her.

This case has stirred strong emotions and calls for justice in Pakistan, with the next hearing set to take place in two weeks.
