In a significant step towards digital transformation, Pakistan is set to enhance its internet infrastructure with 26.5 terabits per second (Tbps) of planned international connectivity. This ambitious project, highlighted in a written response by Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, in the National Assembly, aims to boost the country’s digital economy, improve connectivity, and provide a seamless online experience for businesses and individuals alike.
Why This Matters?
With the increasing demand for high-speed internet, efficient data transfer, and uninterrupted connectivity, Pakistan is aligning itself with global digital trends. The move will enhance online services, support businesses, startups, and freelancers, and improve streaming, gaming, and remote working experiences.
The Backbone of the Upgrade – Five Submarine Cables
The new connectivity will be powered by five international submarine cables, which will significantly reduce latency, improve redundancy, and ensure faster and more stable internet across the country. Here’s a breakdown of the planned capacity:
- AFRICA 1 (PTCL) – 6.5 Tbps
- SMW6 (Transworld Associates – TWA) – 6 Tbps
- 2AFRICA (TWA) – 10 Tbps
- PEACE (LINKdotNET) – 2 Tbps
- Makran Gulf Gateway (MGG-1 – Cybernet) – 2 Tbps
What Will Change?
✔ Faster Internet Speeds – Users will experience high-speed browsing, smoother video streaming, and efficient cloud computing.
✔ Better Connectivity for Businesses – Companies, freelancers, and startups will benefit from stable and secure online transactions.
✔ Growth of IT & E-Commerce Sectors – The improved infrastructure will pave the way for digital growth, IT exports, and remote job opportunities.
✔ Enhanced Gaming & Streaming – Gamers and streaming enthusiasts can enjoy low-latency gaming and HD/4K content without buffering.
Pakistan’s Digital Future
With this major step, Pakistan is positioning itself as a key player in the global digital economy. The increased bandwidth will not only cater to local needs but also attract international tech investments, fostering a digitally connected and economically progressive future.
