Punjab Set to Become a Global Tourist Hub with ‘Magnificent Punjab’ Project

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has unveiled a groundbreaking tourism initiative, “Magnificent Punjab,” aimed at transforming the province into a global tourist hotspot. With 170 historical sites set for development, the project is poised to highlight Punjab’s rich cultural and historical heritage.

Key Features of the ‘Magnificent Punjab’ Project

1. Revamping 170 Historical Sites

The Punjab government has mapped out 101 gurdwaras and 53 churches to be restored as world-class tourist destinations. This move will particularly attract Sikh and Christian pilgrims, fostering religious tourism in the region.

2. Establishment of Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority

To streamline heritage conservation efforts, the Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority will be formed. This body will oversee all tourism and cultural restoration projects, ensuring efficient management.

3. Phased Heritage Restoration Plan

The Annual Development Plan will finance the restoration work in three phases:

  • Phase 1: Begins in July, to be completed by June next year.
  • Phase 2 & 3: To follow subsequently.

4. Key Restoration and Development Projects

  • Taxila to Become an International ‘Tourist City’
    • The ancient city of Taxila will be transformed into a major international attraction.
    • The Taxila Museum will receive upgrades, including modern display centers, a Siddhartha Gallery, and Buddhist worship spaces.
  • Chhanga Manga: Pakistan’s Swiss-Inspired Entertainment Center
    • Punjab’s Chhanga Manga forest will be revamped into a high-tech tourist destination, modeled after Switzerland’s recreational centers.
  • Preserving Lahore’s Cultural Heart
    • Dilkush Lahore ProjectRs400 million allocated for the preservation of Mall Road’s historical charm.
    • Lahore Museum RevampRs240 million earmarked for the modernization of the 131-year-old museum.
  • Safari Train & Tourist Trails
    • Punjab will be divided into nine tourist regions, each offering unique historical and cultural experiences.
    • A safari train will operate along these trails, and tourists will get discounts through private-sector collaborations.

5. Digital Transformation of Tourism

  • A tourism app has been developed to provide travel information and services.
  • Digital storytelling will be used to preserve Punjab’s 1,000-year history with UNESCO’s assistance.
  • Interactive experiences featuring Punjab’s folk tales, music, art, and Sufi heritage will be introduced.

A Boost for Punjab’s Economy & Global Image

CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized that a strong tourism sector will strengthen Punjab’s economy and uplift Pakistan’s international image. She also praised Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb for her dedication to making this vision a reality.
