Heavy monsoon rains have struck Punjab, claiming 103 lives and injuring 393, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). The relentless downpour has caused significant damage, destroying 128 homes and killing six livestock across the province.
In the past 24 hours alone, 63 fatalities were reported, with 290 injuries. Lahore saw 15 deaths, Faisalabad 9, Sahiwal 5, Pakpattan 3, and Okara 9. The situation prompted Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to declare a province-wide “rain emergency,” including in Rawalpindi, where a one-day holiday was announced to manage the crisis.
The Punjab government has mobilized district administrations, police, and Rescue 1122 to tackle the Punjab flood crisis. Boats, ambulances, helicopters, and specialized vehicles are assisting in areas where roads are blocked. Public hospitals are on standby with 24/7 control rooms to coordinate relief efforts. The Pakistan Army is also actively involved, evacuating residents in flood-hit areas like Jhelum’s Dhok Bhedar and Darapur, providing food, medical aid, and essentials.
In Chakwal, a record-breaking 470mm of rain in 24 hours triggered a cloudburst, causing dam breaches and flooding in Bikhari Kalan, Panwal, Maswal, and Khanpur Bazaar. Four deaths were reported, with several injuries. Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, and the Pakistan Army are conducting evacuations, while hospitals remain on high alert. Historic sites like the Katas Raj Temple have also suffered damage from floodwaters.
The twin cities faced extreme rainfall, with Rawalpindi recording 235mm at Katcheri and Islamabad seeing up to 185mm at Bokra. The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) deployed over 400 pumps to clear waterlogged roads, including Murree Road and Committee Chowk. Traffic disruptions continue, and residents are urged to avoid canals, rivers, and low-lying areas.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has called for public cooperation, urging residents to follow safety guidelines and evacuation orders. With more rain forecast in the next 12-20 hours, emergency services remain on high alert. Compensation will be provided to families of the deceased, and medical treatment is being prioritized for the injured.
