The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is set to collaborate with intelligence agencies to identify officers involved in corruption.
FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial announced the introduction of a stringent reward and punishment system aimed at enhancing accountability within the organization, as reported by Express News.
During a meeting with senior tax officers (grade 17 and above) at FBR headquarters, Langrial outlined the board’s new reform plan. He disclosed that financial incentives for outstanding performance have already been approved, with plans for further enhancements to the reward system. Currently, FBR offers quarterly rewards for exemplary performance, but this structure will be improved.
Langrial emphasized that corruption will not be tolerated in the tax department, stating that law enforcement agencies will closely monitor any officers engaged in corrupt activities, who will face serious consequences.
In addition to addressing internal corruption, the FBR chairman announced measures to combat tax evasion. The FBR will gain expanded powers to modify laws related to information exchange with financial institutions. Plans include establishing model tax offices and digital enforcement stations.
A special fund will be created for enforcement collectorates, with bonuses awarded to officers and staff based on increased tax revenues from imports.
Earlier this year, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif removed 25 officers from the FBR, who held higher pay grades of 21 and 22, following input from three intelligence agencies regarding their financial integrity and competence. This included top-tier board members, chief commissioners, and a former FBR chairman who had been without a position for two years.
In response to these purges, the government has made transfers and postings for 25 FBR officers, including those who are underqualified but currently hold key positions in ‘A’ category postings.
