The Government of Pakistan has decided to continue the Remittance Incentive Scheme to support the country’s economy and reward overseas Pakistanis. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made the announcement on Saturday, appreciating the crucial role of Pakistani expats in strengthening the nation’s financial position.
The Remittance Incentive Scheme is a program designed to motivate overseas Pakistanis to send money home through official banking channels. This initiative plays a key role in boosting foreign exchange reserves and supporting the economy.
In the financial year 2025, Pakistan recorded $38.3 billion in remittances the highest ever in the country’s history. These funds helped Pakistan achieve a current account surplus for the first time in 14 years.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised overseas Pakistanis, calling them “a valuable national asset.” He stated that every contribution from laborers to businesspeople has been important in achieving economic stability.
He emphasized,
“The hard-earned remittances sent by Pakistanis abroad are deeply valued and vital for national development.”
To make sure the scheme runs smoothly, PM Sharif ordered the Ministry of Finance to release funds immediately. This action shows the government’s serious commitment to supporting overseas workers and improving remittance systems.
By continuing the Remittance Incentive Scheme, the government hopes to formalize remittance flows and reduce dependency on informal methods like Hundi or Hawala. These efforts aim to stabilize the economy and maintain steady foreign reserves.
The Prime Minister also promised to remove any hurdles in the remittance process and make it more efficient and easier to use.
The continuation of the Remittance Incentive Scheme reflects Pakistan’s appreciation for its global diaspora. With better policies and support, remittances will continue to be a backbone of Pakistan’s economy.
